Sept 5, 1952 - Apr 5, 2026
Wilbert Byes, Jr., affectionately known as “Tootie,” peacefully passed away on, Sunday April 5, 2026. Wilbert was born on September 5, 1952, in New Orleans, Louisiana, to Vivian Price Byes and the late Wilbert Byes, Sr. As the eldest of nine siblings, he embraced leadership early, becoming a protector, guide, and source of strength for his family.
He was educated in the New Orleans public school system and attended L.B. Landry High School, where his vibrant personality and unforgettable presence earned him lifelong friendships. Known for being the life of the party, Tootie’s bold spirit, humor, and fearless dance moves lit up every room he entered.
Tootie worked at Todd Shipyard and Brown & Root before serving his country in the United States Army. After returning home, he built a respected career as a plasterer, a trade he mastered for many years. Most recently, he dedicated over 12 years of service to UPS as a sorter, where he was admired for his work ethic and reliability.
In 1998, Tootie married his lifelong partner of more than 50 years, Deborah. Their love was deep, enduring, and admired by all who witnessed it. Together they raised four children—Torrey, Timika, Lurshune, and Vivian—and built a family rooted in unity, resilience, and love.
He leaves to cherish his memory 14 grandchildren:
Torrey Jr., Taurus, Tyree, Ashley, Jamien, Deryll Jr., A’lexya, Trinity, Trenton, Treasure, Brandon, Ayana, Jamisha, and Markeith,
along with a host of great‑grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family.
Tootie is also survived by his siblings:
Karen, Allen, Brad, Keith, Kurt, Terry, Sara, and Stacey.
After the passing of his beloved wife just five months ago, Tootie continued his courageous battle with cancer. With strength, dignity, and peace, he completed his journey and joined Deborah on the other side, reunited in eternal rest.
Wilbert “Tootie” Byes, Jr. leaves behind a legacy of laughter, loyalty, hard work, and unforgettable memories. His spirit will forever live on in the hearts of all who loved him.
