On October 29, 2024, after 94 years, the epitome of femininity, calm, and grace danced her way into heaven’s gates. Mrs. Verna Johnson, née Joseph, was a native and lifelong New Orleans, Louisiana resident. In 2005, post-hurricane Katrina, she moved to Saint Rose, Louisiana. Verna loved spending time with her family and dear friends. She was a treasured and dutiful member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, a true fan of the performing arts and television dramas. Her favorite foods were spaghetti and meatballs, oysters, and potatoes, however served.
Verna was the daughter of Florian Joseph, Sr., and Camille Joseph née Montrel. She was the middle sister to Barbara Alexander, née Joseph, and Florian Joseph, II. She was married to her childhood friend, Calvin Johnson, Sr. for 65 1/2 years. They had three children: Calvin Johnson Jr. (Grace), Sandra Royal (James), and Keith Johnson. Verna was “Grandmother” to Calvin Johnson, III, Michael Johnson, Tonya Scott Savage, Tommy Scott III, Keionna Johnson, Darnell Johnson, and Keila Smith. She was the great-grandmother to Michael Smith, Jordan Savage, and Kailey Savage. She was also the beloved “Nanny” to her “Godchild” Pamela Boyd.
Verna was predeceased by her parents, siblings, husband, and two sons. She is survived by her dutiful daughter, grandchildren, and a host of loved ones who revered her as their matriarch. She will be remembered most for her peaceful presence, undeniable strength, and unwavering resilience that inspired all who knew her.
Relatives and friends of the family, Priest and Parishioners of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church and all neighboring churches are invited to the funeral mass at 11:00am on Thursday, November 7, 2024, at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, 401 Spruce Street, Norco, LA 70079. Visitation 9:00am until time of Mass. Interment St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Mausoleum, 13396 River Rd, Destrehan, LA 70047. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the African American Breast Cancer Alliance (https://aabcainc.org/donate) in the name of Verna Johnson.
