Obituary of Richard S. Holmes, Jr.

"A Life Well Lived"

Richard, a resident of La Place, LA, transitioned to eternal life on Tuesday, February 08, 2022 at the age of 77. He left this earth in his home, surrounded by his loving family. The fact that most did not know of his recent battles with serious medical issues showed his courage in facing life challenges with a smile.

Born in Lake Providence, LA on June 9, 1944 as Richard Sherlock Holmes, Jr., the third child of Emma and Richard Holmes, Sr., he accepted Christ and was baptized at an early age. After graduating from GW Griffin High School in Lake Providence, LA, he was drafted into the United States Army where he bravely served his country. Upon honorable discharge, he studied at Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA, where he met the love of his life, and forever wife, Janice.

He spent many years as a top-producing car salesman at various dealerships, before deciding to pursue his dream of becoming a full-time entrepreneur. This dream was fulfilled when he purchased “The Water Hole” in Baton Rouge, and he spent his latter decades enjoying a semi-retired life mixed with property management and playing dominoes.

Richard, affectionately known to family and friends as PeeWee, was a true worshipper, and adored member of New Wine Christian Fellowship. He shared his faith often, and unashamedly, including with the doctors and nurses caring for him in his final days.

He spent his free time relaxing in his recliner and watching westerns, but playing dominoes brought him the most excitement! He was happiest when sharing a meal with family, savoring sweet smiles and the sounds of chatter and laughter. In those moments, he would often ask, “What more could a man ask for?!”

His family was absolutely his greatest treasure. He loved BIG, had a generous heart and was always willing to give positive advice and encouragement. On his death bed, he proclaimed that his only regret was not having more time to spend with his loved ones, and asked each one to follow Jesus and meet him in heaven.

PeeWee leaves to cherish his precious memory his devoted wife of 43 years, Janice Homes; his only daughter, Ashely Holmes; his five sons, Eddie (Lydia) Charles, Rodney Holmes, Quincy (DeeDee) Browder, Jarick (Neecy) Young, and Richard “Trey” Holmes III; one sister, Vera Porter; one nephew, Dexter Holmes; three nieces, Tammy, Tracy and Pint; one godson, Stacy (Molvie) Green, two grandchildren, JaKairick Young and Derrick Charles, and a host of cousins, great nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Emma Holmes, Sr.; grandparents, Sam and Mittie McCraney; his brother, Clyde Holmes; his brother-in-law, George Porter; two grandchildren, Ashley Charles and Valesha Selvage; and several other relatives.

Richard “PeeWee” Holmes impacted the lives of many and will be deeply missed by all that knew and loved him.
