Onesther “Tay-Tay” Eugene Evans

 On December 12, 2022, the Lord called his faithful servant, Onesther Eugene Evans, home for eternal rest. On September 2, 1936 in New Orleans, Louisiana, “Tay-Tay” was born the second child of the late Clarence S. Eugene and Gladys Blue White. She was reared by her maternal grandparents Lizzie Stewart and Willie Blue Jr. Tay accepted Jesus, along with 51 other souls. She was baptized in 1960 at the Mount Zion Baptist Church of St. Rose by the late Reverend W. C. Friloux. She was a life- long resident of St. Rose, Louisiana. She was educated in the St. Charles Parish Public School System attending St. Rose School and Mary McCloud-Bethune High School in Norco, Louisiana.

Tay was joined in holy matrimony to the late Earl A. Evans Sr. on February 26, 1955. To this union eight (8) children were born: June, Cheryl, Lucredia, Cassandra, Patrice, Earl, Jr., Katrina, and Sonja.

How do we get “Tay-Tay” out of Onesther? When she was a baby, her big brother, Alphonse Eugene Sr., who was only 1 year old at the time, wanted to see his “tay-tay”, sister that is, and from that time on she has been known as Tay-Tay.  Tay was blessed with the gift of love for her fellow man, caring and giving from the heart. “No strings attached.”  Do you need a ride? Tay will give you one. Her saying upon greeting you was “Hey Love.” One would ask “How are you doing’? She would reply “I better say good.” Tay would often say “My brother and I wanted for nothing”! She enjoyed life to the fullest. Tay made sure her family was taken care of before she tendered to herself. She single-handedly took care of June for 49 years.

Tay was an active member in the church for 62 years. Whenever the doors of Mount Zion were opened, you can find Tay going through them. She was a choir member and later became the Choir President where she served until her health declined.Her favorite song was “Fill My Cup Lord”. She will go all over singing and praying. A prayer warrior she was!!!!!! She was called to pray for many people all over the River Parishes and New Orleans. Many knew and loved her for her kind spirit. Tay was 1 of the founders of The Voices of Zion (VOZ) Youth Choir.

Tay was employed by St. Charles Public Schools for over 35 years as a custodian, bus driver, and lunchroom monitor. Her career afforded her to meet many people from diverse backgrounds. Tay was known throughout the St. Charles Parish Public School district for her dedicated service. Never wavering in her volunteer work with the Parent-Teacher Association, Parent Teacher Conferences, school festivities, social studies fairs, working concessions, etc.

Tay leaves to cherish her legacy; 6 daughters, Katrina E. (James) Butler of Luling, Cassandra E. (Jarvis) Harris of Marrietta, GA, Sonja E. Blount of LaPlace, Lucredia E. (Jerry) Ingram of Hahnville, Cheryl E. (Earl C.) Brown of St. Rose; Melanie J. (Kenneth) Aubert of St. Rose, 1 son, Earl A. (Orlester) Evans Jr. of LaPlace; functional daughter and devoted friend, Genevieve A. Vinnett of St. Rose; Her devoted nephew Kerry Eugene. Devoted cousin Rev. A.C. Blue. 6 brothers: Alphonse (Estelle) Eugene Sr. of Kenner, Frederick White Jr. of St. Rose; Clarence S. (Janice) Eugene Jr., David (Patricia) Eugene Sr., Barry (Gail) Eugene Sr. all of New Orleans and Clifford (Pamela) Eugene Sr. of Lacombe; 4 sisters: Terry (Dean) Clark of Gonzales; Gail Eugene, Karen Eugene all of New Orleans; Mary E. Harris of Harvey; Brother-in-law, Walter (Blanche) Evans Jr.; Sister-in-Laws Patricia Evans, Buella Johnson Evans, and Theola W. White;  21 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Tay was preceded in death by her husband, the love of her life, Earl A. Evans Sr. Her grandparents (Daddy and Momma) Willie Blue Jr. and Lizzie Stewart Blue. Paternal grandparents Walter Eugene Sr. and Cecelia D. Eugene. Her parents Clarence S. Eugene Sr. and Ruby Eugene; Gladys B. White and Frederick White Sr. Father and Mother-in-Law Walter Evans Sr. and Lillian Paul Evans. Her devoted uncle Allen Blue. Uncle Arthur “Toe” Blue. Her siblings, LaRue Eugene and Tracy Eugene. Stepbrother Herman White Sr.; Brothers-in-Law Joseph Evans, Edward C. Evans Sr., Warren H. Evans, Sr., and Joseph “Chuck” Harris Jr. Godmother, Myrtle Vincent. Her Sisters-in-Law Ethel E. Johnson, Barbara P. Eugene, and Rebecca M. E. Jenkins. Her devoted friend Augustine Paul Griffin. Her daughters, June Marie Evans, and Patrice E. Jarrow.

Relatives and friends of the family, Pastors, Officers and Members of Mt. Zion Baptist Church and all neighboring churches are invited to a Celebration of Life on Friday, December 23, 2022, 11:00 am at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 100 Second Street, St. Rose, LA  70087.  In accordance with the CDC guidelines for COVID-19 masks are suggested for all in attendance and please practice social distancing.  Visitation 9:00 am until time of service at the above-named church.
