Martha Sanders Obituary

A prayerful, God-fearing woman, Martha Louise Keller Sanders (affectionately known as “Muddee” or Mud”) entered peacefully into eternal rest at her home in La Place, LA on December 15, 2023 after an eight year battle with Stage 4 Metastatic Breast Cancer. She was 68 years old.

Martha was born on March 4, 1955, in New Orleans, LA, to the late Betty Mae Dennis Leon and Norris Grimes, Sr. She was a native of Norco, LA and attended school at Mary McLeod  Bethune High School in Norco, Louisiana. She later moved to La Place, LA where she resided until her passing.

From an early age, Martha had a strong relationship and connection to God. She regularly attended mass at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Norco, LA. Although Martha was a devout Catholic, her faith and immense love for God often found her praising and singing gospel hymns with her Aunt Agnes at Good Hope Baptist Church in Norco, LA. Later in Life, she relocated to La Place, LA where she became a resolute member of Ascension of Our Lord Catholic Church. Martha could often be found at the Adoration Chapel of the Church praying and fellowshipping with her fellow prayer partners. Her faith in God was unwavering and she was known for praying for everyone she knew.

On May 6, 1978, she married the love of her life, the late Michael Dwight Sanders, Sr. From their union, two children were born, Nia (Kenneth) Sanders Bowden and Michael Dwight Sanders, Jr. Martha was a caring and loving mother to her two children. She was a constant figure and volunteer at Our Lady of Grace Catholic School in Reserve, LA where both of her children attended elementary school. Even though Martha volunteered often at her children’s school, she was also an employee of Precision Air in Kenner, LA and Dollar General Store in Norco, LA.

Martha was the heart of her home. Like her mother, Betty Mae, she enjoyed cooking for large crowds and would often help her mother sell plates out of their home which was affectionately called “The Big House.” Martha also had a love for taking care of her family, hosting family gatherings, sewing and making clothes for her older sister Peggy; she also really enjoyed playing bingo with her friends. She had a lively infectious laugh that made you feel loved, welcomed, and at home any time you were around her.

To her grandchildren, she was lovingly known as “Mamee Martha.” Everpresent in their lives, Mamee Martha would attend school events, share inside jokes, have lunch dates, have family fun game nights including many rounds of Pitty Pat, and family movie nights where they lovingly watched her favorite sci-fi movies; quite simply, she spoiled them rotten.

Martha’s love for the Word of God inspired her to encourage others to trust God to the fullest of their being. A prayerful woman, she encouraged everyone she encountered to gain a deeper relationship with God and to pray without ceasing. This is the everlasting legacy she instilled in her children and grandchildren.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her two children: Nia (Kenneth) Sanders Bowden and Michael Dwight Sanders, Jr; three sisters: Peggy (Charles) Flowers, Lanette (Andrew) Roberson, and Glory Grimes and four brothers: Ronald (Marilyn) Keller, Kevin Leon, Dwayne Leon, and Norris Grimes, Jr; one daughter-niece: Jasylnn (Bryan) Guidry; four grandchildren: Kenneth Bowden, Jr,Kameron Bowden, Kennedi Bowden, K’Lyn Bowden; two aunts; Agnes Grimes Watson and Willie Mae Grimes and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends. Martha was preceded in death by her husband Michael Dwight Sanders, Sr, her parents Betty Mae Dennis Leon and Norris Grimes Sr, her sister Denise Grimes, and her granddaughter Angel Marie Bowden.
