MSGT Donald Dew Obituary

In Loving Memory of

Master Sergeant Donald Ray Dew

MSGT Donald Ray Dew, 74, passed away peacefully on December 22, 2023 in New Orleans, Louisiana.  He was born on October 4, 1949, in Lumberton, Mississippi, to the late Robert and Lucile Dew. Donald’s life was marked by devotion and service to his family, his country, and his community.

A proud veteran, Donald served in the United States Air Force with unwavering loyalty and honor for 20 years. His commitment to his military duty allowed him to witness the world’s wonders and instilled in him a deep sense of responsibility. After his distinguished military career, he embarked on a new path, beginning a 20-year tenure as a correctional officer with the state of California Corrections in Vacaville. Donald’s dedication to his profession was unwavering, and he approached each day with integrity and compassion.

Donald was a hard worker who dedicated his life to being the best provider for his family. Beyond his professional achievements he had a thirst for knowledge and loved to read, becoming well-versed in various subjects. Although he didn’t talk much about his military service, he had the opportunity to see and experience the world, and he encouraged his children to do the same so they could see how other people lived.

Donald is survived by his beloved former wife, Janet Dew, mother of their cherished children: son Shedrick Dew (Tomeka Young) of Sacramento, CA, and daughter Tameka Dew-Cooley and son-in-law Vantez Cooley of Laplace, LA. His granddaughters, Alani and Amaya Dew, held a special place in his heart, and he delighted in their every accomplishment. Additionally, he leaves behind his niece who he thought of as a daughter, Derenda Whitfield of Hayward, CA. Also nephews: Gregory Banks of Dallas, TX, Derrick Banks of Lumberton, MS, Henry Ward of Lumberton, MS and niece Savoy Herron of Lumberton, MS. His family in love, the Dukes/Brown family (Yvonne, Tommy Jr., Brenda, Evelyn, and Terry), as well as a wide circle of nieces, nephews, family, and friends, all of whom will forever treasure his memory.

Donald was preceded in death by his dear parents, Robert and Lucile Dew, as well as his cherished siblings: Wilma Dew, Charles Dew, Cliff Dew, Alma Jean Banks, Brenda Dew, and Robert Earl Dew.
