Lorraine Albertine (Mathieu) Alexis Obituary
Lorraine Albertine Mathieu Alexis
1931 – 2025
Lorraine Albertine Mathieu Alexis affectionately called, Lo, Lil’ Tee or GIGI entered eternal rest on Saturday, January 11, 2025, at 10:07pm at the age of 93. She was born in Lucy, Louisiana to Edgar Benjamin and Carmel LeBoeuf Mathieu on September 21, 1931, the last of 5 children. As a native and resident of Edgard, Louisiana Lorraine was a parishioner of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.
After completing the 8th grade in the segregated St. John the Baptist Parish educational system for Black Students, she continued her education at the “Hahnville Colored High School” in St. Charles Parish. It was the first high school for “Negro” children in St. Charles Parish that added one secondary grade from 1947 until 1950, when eleven students completed 12th grade in June 1951. This became the first “colored” graduating class in the history of St. Charles Parish which Lorraine was one of the eleven graduates of this historic moment. Then she continued her education at Xavier University of New Orleans, Louisiana where to her surprise (her words), she was elected Freshmen Class Queen. She earned her Bachelors Degree in Education in 1955. She then became employed as a teacher/educator in the St. John the Baptist Parish School System for 30 plus years. While employed, she continued her education at Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, Louisiana. She was fortunate to guide and shape the mind of many students on the west bank of the parish. It was Lorraine’s pleasure to be recognized by former students and recalling those special moments under her tutelage.
Lorraine leaves behind her legacy and memories to her grandson Kristopher Mathieu Turner and four great grandchildren: MeiLani Lennaire Turner, Kristian Juelz Turner, Kaden Mathieu Turner, Kasen Mathieu Turner; her brother Roy Joseph (Edna Nicholas) Mathieu, In-laws, Lawrence (Marie Nicholas) Alexis, Merlin Alexis, Delores Brown, Zenobia Bachemin and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents Edgar Benjamin and Carmel LeBoeuf Mathieu, beloved husband Elmo Joseph Alexis, beloved daughter Lennaire Carmel Alexis, beloved sister Marie Theresa Mathieu (Kado) McCray, brothers Noah Felix (Melba Bartholomew) Mathieu and Edgar Lansdale (Arthmese Jarrow) Mathieu, In-laws Harold Alexis, Blanche Moll, Grace Populus, Olga Barnes and Gloria Clayton.
