Larry Edgar Martin, Sr. transitioned from his earthly home on Monday, September 4, 2023 at East Jefferson Hospital, age 81.  He was born on August 7, 1942 to the late Dora Rebecca Taylor and Lorey Martin, Sr.  Larry was reared in New Orleans, LA.  and often talked about life in the 9th Ward.  Larry graduated from Carver High School in New Orleans, LA.  In 1966, Larry married the love of his life, the former Vera Sharlow Martin.  To this union three children were born, Suzettte, Amanda and the late Larry Martin, Jr. Larry was employed with the several construction companies in the river parish area and later gained employment with Bayou Steel Corporation in Laplace, LA until he retired in 1994.

Larry was a member of St. John Saints Club.  Larry loved traveling to watch his team play.  When he wasn’t traveling, you could find him in front of the television watching his team play. He always watched alone because he didn’t want any distractions while fussing at the players. 

Larry leaves to cherish his memories, his children, Suzette Gatling (Reserve, LA), and Amanda (Fredrick) Means, Sr. (Laplace, LA), five grandchildren, Doraness Scott, Lucas Martin, Fredrick Means, Jr., LaNecia & Lawrence Gatling, Jr., two Great Grandchildren, Starr Milani Davis & A’Mari Renee Anderson. His sister, Martha Ann Martin Keys, three godchildren, Travis Sharlow, Nisheka Anderson & Daejonae White-Anderson.  He also leaves a host of nieces & nephews including his favorite niece, Desirre Sharlow-Jones and a devoted friend, Wendell Wilson, cousins, Carolyn and Lucky. 

Larry is preceded in death by his wife, Vera Sharlow Martin and son Larry, “Boo” Martin, Jr., his parents Dora Rebecca Taylor and Lorey Martin, Sr., his grandparents, Martha Kelly Martin and Martin, Sr., and Mary Joy Gray Manuel, father, and mother-in-law Olebar & Louise Mercier Sharlow and several uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and brothers and sisters in law.

Relatives and friends of the family, Pastors, Officers and Members of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church and all neighboring churches are invited to a Celebration of Life at 11:00am on Saturday, September 16, 2023 at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, 127 W. 3rd Street, LaPlace, LA.  Rev. Freddie Howard, Pastor-Officiant. Visitation 9:00am until time of service the above-named location.  Interment St. John Memorial Gardens, 2205 W. Airline Hwy, LaPlace, LA  70068. There will also be a public visitation from 4:00pm to 6:00pm on Friday, September 15, 2023 at the Patrick H.
