REMEMBERING JOANN MITCHELL BAILEY
Joann M. Bailey departed this earthly life quietly and peacefully on Wednesday, May 10, 2023 at her home with her daughters Tronda and Brashonda beside her.
Joann was born on October 20, 1950 to the late Herman Sr. and Theresa (Green) Mitchell. She was one of nine children brought into the world through their union. A life-long resident of LaPlace, Joann was educated in the St. John the Baptist Parish public school system and graduated in May 1969 from Fifth Ward High School.
Mama Joann, as she was affectionately called, was the proud mother of Tronda Crier and Brashonda Bailey, grandmother of TaiJanae and KaiRanae Crier and the late Adrian L. Crier, Jr., and great grandmother of Adrian D. Crier.
Joann received Jesus Christ as her Savior and was baptized at Providence Baptist Church #1 by Rev. Samuel Jones on June 23, 1968 behind the levee in the Mississippi River. She recently attended Milesville Memorial Church of God in Christ pastored by Bishop Ronald Frank.
She enjoyed cooking and was well known for her spicy shrimp salad and stewed oxtails. During the winter, there would be people lined up with bowls-in-hand when she made her once-a-year vegetable soup. It was the best ever! She loved people and people loved her. She could always be found telling stories that made people laugh and want to be around her. Her daughters’ friends would often stop by just to spend time with her.
After working for other companies to provide for her children, Joann became an entrepreneur later in life. She started Bailey’s Transportation, a taxi cab service operating out of the New Orleans International Airport. She loved being her own boss and the flexibility it gave her to be available for her family. She often told stories about the passengers she transported across the greater New Orleans area and the friends she made while sitting in the cab line waiting for fares.
She was preceded in death by: her parents, Herman Sr. and Theresa Mitchell; siblings, Wilbert and Cleveland Mitchell and Velma Harris; and grandson, Adrian Crier, Jr.; nieces, Cajuane Rose and Adrian Lane; nephew, Wayne Mitchell.
She leaves to cherish and to share precious memories of her: two daughters, Tronda (Adrian Sr.) Crier and Brashonda Bailey; granddaughters, TaiJanae and KaiRanae Crier; great grandson, Adrian Crier; beloved and dedicated companion, Lionel Campbell; siblings, Calvin (Edna) Mitchell, Betty (Conell) McClendon, Diana Stewart, Herman Mitchell, Jr., Whitney (Sheila) Mitchell; sister-in-law, Sophie Mitchell; devoted niece, Erica Russell; Godchildren, Darlene Green and Krishandra James; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends.
