Obituary of James E. Smith

James E. Smith transitioned to his heavenly home on Thursday, December 15, 2022.  James E. Smith was born on July 20, 1935. He was lovingly known as Deacon James; Deacon Smith; Bro Smith; Mr. James; Mr. Smith, Dad; Pops; Papa; Papa James; and his childhood nickname “Scace”. He was born and raised in New Orleans to the late Rev. George Kary Smith and Edna Wilson Smith.

Devoted husband to Edmonia Rita Lewis Smith and father of Alden Smith (LaTissha); Lincoln Smith (Gail); Gideon Smith (Shanika). Proud grandfather of Rachel; Cameron; Salonge; Gabrielle; Lincoln Chesed; Caleb; Logan; Sanai; Savion; and the late Cherish. The great grandfather of A’kyi; Laila; Nova; Avea; Miller; and Reid.

He is survived by siblings; Charles Smith (Delphine) of Boutte, LA; Joseph Smith (JoAnn) of Fairfield CA. Preceded in death by Rev. George K. Smith, Jr. of North Brunswick; John Smith; Eddie Smith; Raymond Smith all of New Orleans LA.

Brother-in-law of Della Ware and the late Lincoln Lewis.

Also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

He was educated in the Orleans parish school system and graduated from Booker T. Washington Senior High School. He joined the United States Army in 1954 and retired as 1st Sargent in 1974. After retiring from the military, he was a supervisor at Godchaux Henderson Sugar Refinery in Reserve, LA until the closing of that refinery. He then worked at the United States Post Office as a Clerk and acting supervisor until his retirement in 1998.

He was a caring Deacon who loved attending Sunday School, Bible Study; and working on the Cemetery board.

Relatives and friend of the family, Pastors, Officers and Members of Mt. Airy Baptist Church and all neighboring churches are invited to the Celebration of Life on Friday, December 30, 2022, 10:00 am at Mt. Airy Baptist Church, 13635 Old Spanish Trail, Boutte, LA  70039.  Rev. Clyde Staes-Pastor-Officiant.  Visitation 8:30 am until time of service at the above-named church.  Interment Mt. Airy Memorial Park Cemetery, Boutte, LA.  Final Arrangements Entrusted to Patrick H.
