James Mitchell Downing, III
1942 - 2025
James Mitchell Downing, III, affectionately known as “Smokey,” age 82, of Hahnville, Louisiana, transitioned peacefully from his earthly home on June 10, 2025, at 11:50pm, surrounded by family. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and proud native of Killona. James leaves behind a legacy rooted in love, endurance, and generational strength.
James was born on June 30, 1942, in Killona, Louisiana, to the late James Mitchell Downing, Jr. and Bertrecia “Bay-Bay” Morris. He was also cherished by his grandparents: paternal—James Mitchell Downing, Sr. and Franceline Dinvaut; maternal—Dave Morris, Sr. and Rose Handy.
James accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized by the late Rev. James S. Powell, Sr. He was a lifelong member of Canaan Baptist Church in Killona, where he served faithfully on the Deacon Board, as a Trustee, Treasurer, and a member of the Cemetery Committee. His service to the church remained steady until his health began to decline.
James grew up in a close-knit Killona community, shaped by strong family values. He enjoyed gardening and lawn care, and his quiet strength and work ethic were evident from an early age. He attended George Washington Carver High School in Hahnville, where he played in the band and later joined Killona’s beloved “Soul Patrol” baseball team, excelling as a first baseman.
He dedicated 42 years to Avondale Shipyard, known for his precision, skill, and dependability. As a pipefitter, James often lent his talents to help family and neighbors, never seeking recognition.
James shared a beautiful life with his wife, Patricia Lewis Downing, who remained by his side as a devoted partner and caregiver through his 13-year journey with Alzheimer’s. Their union blended two families into one. He loved each of his children deeply and formed enduring bonds with:—James Mitchell Downing IV (Annette), Leatha Downing, Ken Downing (Dedra), Michelle Cox (Bryant), Tommy Downing (Gidget), Jared Kevin Downing, Rechelle Thomas Pierre (Charles), Patrick Thomas, Re’Shawn Thomas Rayford (Glen, Sr.), and Javin Downing—forming deep bonds that endured through the years.
James is preceded in death by his parents, James Mitchell Downing, Jr. and Bertrecia “Bay-Bay” Morris; his siblings, Ivory Downing, Sr., Everett Downing, Sr., Haywood Downing, and Aleada Downing; and his sister-in-law, Sheila Lorio Downing.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Patricia Lewis Downing; 21 grandchildren; and a legacy full of 22 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings Ida Mae Downing, Bertrecia Downing, Andrus “Pop” Downing, and Sandra Downing; his sisters-in-law Navada Lewis Borne of LaPlace, LA, and Wanda Williams of Marrero, LA; and his brother-in-law David Lewis (Vanessa) of Edgard, LA. He leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and two dear life-long friends: Joyce Raymond and Calvin Harris. Thank you to everyone for taking the time with James. James leaves a legacy of love and memories that will forever be cherished by his wife, Patricia Lewis Downing, and his children.
