Gwendolyn Hymes Tally, affectionately known as Gwen, was born on March 11, 1953, to Alexander Hymes, Sr, and the late Odessa Pierre Hymes, entered this world as a quiet, steady light. A devoted mother, she poured her deepest love into her three sons — Kerry, Kevin, and Isaac.
A native of Metairie, Louisiana, Gwen made Bunche Village her lifelong home, where she was surrounded by the community she knew and loved well. She was a proud graduate of Riverdale High School and dedicated many years of service to the New Orleans Shirt Company until her health began to fail. Beyond her formal career, Gwen was a beloved presence in the community. She operated a local sweet shop, where she became well known for her frozen cups, bringing joy to countless children and neighbors.
Gwen was also a devoted New Orleans Saints fan who faithfully cheered for her team through every season and took great joy in supporting them on game days. She also had a deep love for animals, especially her dog Trouble, showing them great kindness and care. She will be fondly remembered for her signature wit and familiar sayings, including “Hellooo,” “Go head on,” and “Yeah right,” which will forever bring smiles to those who knew and loved her.
Gwen’s life, rich with grace and quiet strength, continues to speak through the love she gave, the faith she carried, and the legacy she leaves behind. She leaves a legacy of memories to be cherished by her two sons, Kerry Hymes (Tina) and Kevin Tally, Jr. (Tanya); her father, Alexander Hymes, Sr.; five sisters: Brenda Scott, Ivory Jean Smith, Mary Louise Hymes, Claudette Hymes, and Charlonda Hymes; and one brother, Alexander Hymes, Jr. Her memory will also live on through her grandchildren: Kevin Tally, Jr., Kernesha, Tiffany, Danesha, Kenderick, Kerrille, Talis, Kennedy, and Gavin, as well as her 10 great-grandchildren; her godchildren: Lawrence Scott, Tiffany Scott, and Tasha Carter; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and devoted friends.
