Grace (Hilaire) Cook Obituary

Grace H. Cook

May 1, 1931 - April 12, 2025

Grace Hilaire Cook, age 93, passed away peacefully in her home on April 12, 2025 in her hometown of Edgard, Louisiana. After living a long and dutiful life, God called her home. Grace lived a life marked by a strong connection to her family, resilience, and a deep devotion to her Catholic faith.

Grace obtained her Education degree from Southern University. While there, she pledged and became a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) Sorority. Years later she obtained her Master’s Degree. She served as a well-known educator/teacher in the community. She retired as an evaluator/instructional coordinator from the St. John the Baptist Parish school system. Her tenure extended over 40 years. She was active in her church and served as an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion. She was also a member of the Knights of Peter Claver Ladies Auxillary, Court 66. With her love of books and reading, it seemed fitting that she also served on the St. John Parish library board.  She was a member of the Wantu Wazuri Civic and Social Club which committed time and effort to improving the quality of life for those residing on the West Bank of St. John the Baptist Parish.  Even in retirement she was a member of the Louisiana Retired Teachers Association and the St. John Parish Retired Teachers Association.

Grace was a loving and caring individual. Her compassion knew no boundaries. She was always willing to help those in need. Those that asked for her help and even those that didn’t.  As a mom, she taught us right from wrong, how to forgive, and the importance of keeping God in our lives. She lectured us when necessary, dished out some tough love when appropriate, but always provided all the love we needed to stay strong.

She is lovingly remembered by her children: daughter, Reonda Cook Cannon (Bruce); son, Ron Frank Cook (Charlene), grandchildren, Nicole Cook and Lauren Cook; sister, Delores Cox (Milton), sister-in-law Slata Mae Hilaire, along with many nieces and nephews throughout the extended families and countless friends.

She is preceded in death by her husband Robert F. Cook, her father, Romauld Hilaire; mother, Noelie Hilaire Smith, sister, Audrey Oubre (Warren Sr.); brother, Bertrand Hilaire; sister-in-law, Evelyn Cook Strickland; brother-in-laws, Lonnie Cook and Sigmond Cook.
