Fannie Carey Obituary

Fannie Meyer Carey was born on September 18, 1940 in New Orleans, LA to the late Hazel Daisy Narcisse and George West Meyer, Sr. She was an amazing wife, mother, sister, grandmother, aunt, friend, and mentor with a range of love that had no limits. Fannie was the eldest of six sibling, Gloria Odessa Landry, Michael James Meyer, Sr., Janeka Meyer and the late Cecelia Meyer and George Meyer, Jr. She also had three sisters-in- law, Stephanie Meyer, Verna Meyer, and Georgia Carey and one brother-in-law Charles Landry, Sr.

Fannie received her early childhood education in St. Charles Parish and subsequently graduated from Southern University in 1966 with a BA in Education. She furthered her career by attending Nicholls State University in pursuit of her master’s degree. Fannie had a thirst for knowledge and continued to broaden her paradigm by taking additional courses at Xavier, Delgado, and Loyola Universities. She enjoyed attending workshops in reading, language, and education.

On June 8, 1963, the late Henry Carey, Sr., and Fannie were united is holy matrimony during a gorgeous double wedding with her sister Gloria, who married Charles Landry, Sr. From Fannie and Henry’s lovely union came three children whom she adored immensely, Henry, Jr. Arlene Roxanne, and the late Leslie Terrance Carey.

During Fannie’s college years she realized something was missing from her life; therefore, she accepted the call of Christ! The late Rev. S.W. Harris of True
Vine Baptist Church baptized Fannie, which enlightened her path as a faithful servant to the almighty God. Her favorite song was, “Guide Me O Thou Great Jehovah” which she often sang during communion and sung by her father, George West Meyer, Sr. (aka Daddy West).

Fannie fulfilled her call to duty by singing in the choir, attending Bible Study, rehearsals, and programs for over 60 years at True Vine Baptist Church. Being a teacher at heart, she taught Mission Classes and Sunday School while serving under Rev. Harris and Pastor Emeritus Rev. Dr. Allen LaGrange, never waiving in her faith. Fannie and the Golden Girls, Slata Hilaire (Minnie), late Rose Tiller, late Albertha Green (Ms. Bert), late Mrs. Sadie Francis supported their community as evidenced in visiting neighboring churches in St. John, St. Charles and Orleans parishes.

Compassion and unlimited patience never grew weary for Fannie. Her door was always open as she welcomed family and friends who were either in her home or car. Fannie always had a warm spiritual word to uplift family and friends.

Anyone who knew Fannie, understood there was not any trip that was too far to travel. She traversed many high mountains and low valleys, but through prayer she conquered journeys. Driving from Hahnville to California while teaching kids how to read a map and let them lead the way, are yet additional memories of her patience and guidance. Fannie’s source of strength came from God as she truly let him order her steps in her personal and professional career. Her professional career. Her professional career excitedly began in St. Charles Parish where she worked for five years and a half year by teaching grades 1-6 at Killona Elementary and grades 7-12 at George Washington Carver High School. She further labored in love in Orleans Parish and taught for 25 years at Derham Middle, Berhman Middle, LB Landry Junior & Senior High School and LB Landry Learning Academy Middle School. In sum, she did a phenomenal job of contributing 31.5 wonderful years of her life by planting seeds for future generations.

Fannie’s devotion, kind heart and enthusiasm were magnetic, thus children quickly identified, which resulted in an eternal bond. Fannie also served as the Language Arts Department Chairperson at James Derham and LB Landry Schools. As an avid reader, she was a member of the International Reading Association and the middle school association. One of the highlights of Fannie’s career was her being chosen the 2001-2002 Teacher of the Year at Landry Middle School.

After retirement, she showered youth with love by tutoring neighborhood students. Sewing was also a craft she enjoyed with her sisters. As the matriarch of the family the torch has now passed from Fannie to Gloria. Fannie’s legacy is forever engraved in our hearts due to her servant spirit, relentless teaching, and family unity. Her love was authentic because if there was a need, she was there to provide. She stood by the bedside of many, held the hands of others and loved each one.

Fannie Meyer Carey embraced blue skies, sunny days, and stars by night and gently stretched her hand to the Precious Lord while quietly answering our Heavenly Father’s call to come home and rest on July 31, 2022. All is well, as evidenced in Psalm 55:6 NIV- “And I said, oh that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and be at rest.” Additionally, her service is commended as in Matthew 23:23 NIV “Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things.
