Elwood Peter Gautier Obituary

On October 6, 2024, Elwood Peter Gautier passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving wife, children, and eldest granddaughter. He was 85 years old.

Born in Wallace, Louisiana, he lived on a sugar cane farm with his large family. He spoke fondly of his younger days, especially when telling stories of his favorite activities – singing in the choir and playing baseball. After high school, he joined the military where he traveled the world and made many friends. He eventually settled in Aurora, Colorado and began his career as a police officer.

While working there, he met his wife of 53 years. Together, they began a family in Denver, Colorado and ultimately put down roots in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He worked for the Baton Rouge. Police Department for over 20 years, rising in rank to Sergeant. He enjoyed recounting his days on the force, describing harrowing tales of keeping one step ahead of dangerous criminals and amusing recollections of criminal intent gone wrong. He was known for his ability to de-escalate tumultuous situations with his calm and witty demeanor. He retired after 26 years of service for love to Washington, DC where he spent his retirement days cooking the Creole recipes of his mother and tending a garden just as his father had done. A final move to Mobile, Alabama allowed him to spend time with his granddaughters who loved “helping” in Papa’s Garden. His fresh vegetables, especially the okra which he managed to grow equally well in both Washington, DC, and Alabama, will be forever missed.

Elwood was preceded in death by his parents, Whitmore, and Georgianna Gautier, and by siblings, Perry Gautier, Alison Rousell, Stan Gautier, Larry Gautier, and Whitmore John Gautier,Jr. He is survived by his wife, Mary Gautier of Mobile, Alabama; children, Peter Gautier (Lori Williams) of Portland, Oregon, and Nicky (Chris) Hall of Shreveport, Louisiana; grandchildren,Breanna Hamlin, Leah, and Christopher Hall; and his sisters, Deola Duronslet, and Lois Gautier. as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
