EDSELL WYMAN BROWN

Edsell Wyman Brown departed his earthly life on Thursday, January 30, 2025, age 76.  Edsell Wyman Brown was born on April 25, 1948, down the Bayou in Plaquemine, LA, to the late Gladys E. Brown and Noah Brown. He grew up in a close-knit community, attending Iberville High School (IHS), where he built the foundation for a life of service, dedication, and perseverance.

In 1965, Edsell answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Marine Corps. During his four years of service, he bravely fought in the Vietnam War, demonstrating courage and commitment in the face of great adversity. While stationed in Da Nang, Vietnam, he experienced a memorable moment when his uncle, Silas O’Neal, a merchant seaman, visited him as he worked high atop a telegraph pole installing communication lines—symbolic of the vital role he played in keeping his fellow Marines connected in battle.

Edsell served with honor and dedication, witnessing firsthand the sacrifices made by so many brave Marines to protect the freedoms we hold dear. After completing his service, he was honorably discharged, carrying with him the values of discipline, resilience, and deep patriotism.

Following his military service, Edsell worked for many years as a welder at Avondale Shipyard until its closure led to his retirement.

The greatest joy of his life was his family. He married his beloved wife, Rosella (Rose) Brown, and together they built a home filled with love and cherished memories. Later in life, he accepted Christ, finding peace and purpose in his faith.

Edsell is survived by Ralph (Claudette) Dawson, Oliver (Leslie) Petty, Derrell (Robert) Petty, Gloria (Robert) Hayes, and the late Arthur Petty; aunts: Beulah (the late Silas) O’Neal, Geraldine (the late Oscar) Mellion.  Mother-in-law Rosemary Lee Hughes, sisters-in-law Sherlyn Hughes, Macqueline (Min. David) Richard, and Joann (Jahmal) Tillman; and aunts Leona (Gene) Roy, Rose (Rev. Carnell) Sisler, Gloria Ross, and the late Eliza Robinson.

He played a pivotal role in the lives of Chrystal (Steven) LaBranche, Dana (Marlon) Lloyd, and Tara (Troy) White.

He was preceded in death by Elnora Batieste, Paul Hughes, Ronnie Ross, and Francella Hinton.

Edsell also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, his godchild, Catina Barge, and devoted friends Donnie and Marilyn Hart Sr., and Terry and Dianne Flemmings.

Edsell Wyman Brown’s legacy is one of service, love, and unwavering commitment—to his family, his country, and his faith. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered.

Landry Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70114.  Interment Westlawn Cemetery, Gretna, Louisiana.
