Darryl “Smooth” James Bias

May 19, 1956- February 15, 2024

On Thursday, February 15, 2024, Darryl James Bias entered the eternal gates of heaven at the age of 67. He was born on May 19, 1956, in Lafayette, Louisiana to Howard Slaughter Sr. and the late Lucinda Bias.

Darryl was most proud of being born and raised in Ville Platte, Louisiana. His grandparents raised him in the church from a very young age. He confessed his love for God and was baptized at St. Luke Baptist Church in Ville Platte. Even as life transitioned his faith and trust in God never wavered. He became a member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church of Ama, LA. under Reverend D.B. Mollaire. He served on the brotherhood, sang in both the Male and Mass Choir for many years. Under Reverend Kendall Pierre Sr., he served as a devoted deacon.

Darryl grew up in Ville Platte, Louisiana where he was raised by his late grandparents Hosa “Pop” Slaughter and Leeanna “Mom” Slaughter. Although, his grandparents were the nucleus of the man that he became; his mother’s sisters, Lucy and Annie also had great influence during his upbringing. He attended James Stephens Elementary School and graduated from Ville Platte High School in 1975. Darryl was known for his love for sports but most importantly for the groundbreaking measures he made playing basketball at VPHS. He was the first black 1,000-point scorer at Ville Platte High. He made the All-Parish and All-District team in 1975.

Many knew Darryl for his humbleness, dedication, and hardworking. He worked at Avondale Shipyard and Brown and Root Contractors. He continued to excel in his career and became a lab analyst working at Monsanto Chemical Plant (now known as Bayer) for 28 years. He retired in 2018.

In his free time Darryl enjoyed spending time with family, going to sporting events, and riding motorcycles where got the name “Smooth.” He was a founding member of the “After Hour Riders” out of Ama, Louisiana and a patched in member of “Bad Blood Posse” out of Houma, Louisiana until his transition.

After graduating high school, he became a resident of St. Charles Parish where he met his loving wife of 45 years, Shelita Bias. They married on July 28,1979, and to this union, two beloved children were born: Peyton Bias and Breanne (Dr. Quentin Guillory, devoted son-in-law).

Darryl was the eldest of his five siblings: Joseph Bias Sr. (Loretta), the late Jessie Bias (JoAnn), Tiffaney Taylor (Rudy), Michelle Blue, Howard “Koty” Slaughter Jr., and the late Lisa Tezeno.

He is proceeded in death by his mother (Lucinda Bias), brother (Jessie), grandparents (Hosa and Leeanna Slaughter, Mary Robinson, and Chester Bias), Nanny (Annie Wright), aunt (Pearl Slaughter), uncles (Jessie Bias and Clement Slaughter), and mother-in-law (Joyce Wright).
