Sylvester Placide Dumas

October 5, 1944 - July 21, 2026

Sylvester Placide Dumas peacefully entered eternal rest on July 21, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on October 5, 1944, in South Vacherie, Louisiana, he was the beloved son of the late Cyril Dumas and Floretta Dumas.

Sylvester shared 59 years of a beautiful and blessed marriage with the love of his life, Gloria Dumas. Together, they built a legacy rooted in faith, love, and family, raising three cherished children: Shelvin Dumas (Kelli), Tellisha Cobb (Gerald), and Telga Hubbard (Shannon). His family was the center of his life, and he took immense pride in his three children, nine grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. He cherished every opportunity to celebrate their accomplishments, share his wisdom, and create lasting memories. He treasured each of them and delighted in watching his family continue to grow across generations.

Sylvester was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend whose unwavering love, guidance, and support touched generations. He was preceded in death by his siblings Herbert (Alice), Earnest (Melanie), Eunice (Francis), Roy (Louanne). He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved siblings, Anita Woods (Harry, Hymel), Joseph Dumas (Nancy), Betty Paul (Walter), Floretta Harry (Raymond), along with a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends whose lives were enriched by the legacy of love and faith he leaves behind.

Sylvester valued education and lifelong learning. He attended St James High School and carried the lessons of hard work, dedication, and integrity throughout his life. He enjoyed a distinguished career with Kaiser Aluminum/LaRoche, where he worked for more than 40 years before retiring. Through his professionalism, strong work ethic, and commitment to excellence, he earned the respect and admiration of colleagues and friends alike.

Beyond his work and ministry, Sylvester found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He had a passion for gardening and took great pride in tending to his yard and nurturing things to grow. He also enjoyed riding his bicycle along the levee, often finding peace and reflection in the beauty of the outdoors. Known for his skillful hands and willingness to help others, he was often called upon for air conditioning and repair work, a talent he generously shared with family, friends, and neighbors. Whether working in his garden, cycling the levee, or fixing something in need of repair, Sylvester approached every task with patience, dedication, and care.

A lifelong and devoted Catholic, Sylvester faithfully served his church and community with humility and compassion. At St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, he ministered as both a Eucharistic Minister and a Minister of Care, bringing comfort and spiritual nourishment to countless individuals. His deep commitment to his faith was further reflected through his distinguished service as a Fourth-Degree Knight of Columbus.

In recognition of his extraordinary dedication to the Catholic Church, Sylvester was honored with the Order of St. Louis Medal, the highest recognition bestowed upon lay Catholic parishioners for exemplary service and leadership. His servant's heart extended well beyond the walls of the church. As a dedicated volunteer in his community, Sylvester generously gave of his time and talents through the River Parish Retired Senior & Volunteer Program, earning the organization's Top Hours Earned Award in 2021 for his outstanding commitment to serving others.

Those who knew Sylvester will rememberhim most for his gentle spirit, steadfast faith, generous heart, and unwavering devotion to his family. He lived a life of purpose, kindness, and service, leaving an enduring legacy that will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know and love him.

His memory will forever be treasured, his example forever admired, and his love forever carried in the hearts of those he leaves behind.

Relatives and friends of the family, Priest and Parishioners of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church and all neighboring Churches are invited to the Mass of Christian Burial at 12:00pm on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church,  529 West 5th Street, Laplace, LA 70068.  Visitation will begin at 11:00am until the time of Funeral Mass.  Interment St. John Memorial Gardens, 2205 W.
